Description

This Dhokra Nandhi is a striking example of India’s ancient tribal metalcraft tradition, where form, symbolism, and ornamentation blend into a vibrant artistic expression. At 12 inches in length, this Nandhi carries a majestic presence, adorned with detailed jewelry motifs, carved bells, and traditional saddle patterns. The rich brass tones are beautifully complemented by earthy patinas and hand-applied colours — hallmarks of Dhokra craftsmanship. Nandhi, the sacred bull of Shiva, embodies devotion and steadfastness, and in this tribal interpretation, he takes on an even more expressive character, full of texture, rhythm, and cultural storytelling. This piece makes a bold statement as a centrepiece in homes, studios, or spiritual corners, radiating grounded energy and artisanal charm.

Craft Story — A 4,000-Year-Old Tradition Continues

Dhokra art is one of India’s oldest metalcasting traditions, practiced for over 4,000 years by tribal communities across Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. Every Dhokra sculpture begins as a hand-moulded clay core, layered with strips of natural wax that artisans shape into beads, textures, and patterns. Once cast using the ancient lost-wax method, the wax melts away, leaving behind a unique brass form — no two pieces are ever identical.

The ornate necklaces, decorative bells, and patterned saddle on this Nandhi reflect centuries of tribal symbolism, where animals are revered as protectors and carriers of divine force. Designed with both ritual intent and artistic flair, this Nandhi carries forward a lineage of craftsmanship that honours community, tradition, and the spiritual bond between humans and nature.

A true heirloom, it preserves the soul of Dhokra craft while standing proudly as a work of art for contemporary spaces.
